APA format question is this right or wrong?

The format probably tells you to put the date after the author's name because some articles cite a number of works by the same author, so you can have a passage like this: In Farkle (1981) we see that people can be foolish, but later Farkle (1999) says that they're brilliant. (Two different articles by the same author.) I would take one of the following steps: 1) Reword the sentence so that the date can follow the name, for example "In "Marked Women," Tannen (1993) says ..." 2) Ask the instructor for additional explanation about what to do. (You'll be sure it will be accepted.) 3) Ask a librarian to help you find the correct form in an APA style manual. One of those approaches should do the trick.
